Well, he is gone. So the question is, who will come next? The speculation was a few years ago that the next Pope would be chosen from the ultraconservative South American contingent.
I'm sure a lot of young people are saying "Who cares". I have to say that this is a rather foolish sentiment, since the HRCC is one of the richest corporations in the world, and their leader has more political power over a wider base than any other political leader in the world, because there are Catholics everywhere, and by default, many leaders will align themselves with their precepts so as not to appear heretical or unsympathetic to the conservative religious base. I imagine that the ennui about it has to do with the fact that JPII has been Pope for 25 years. I remember when he became Pope; I was in High School.
So watch the process, it's interesting, and a historical moment, no matter what your own religious leanings.
