A Romulus Tail

Dog protected abandoned newborn, doctors say

* Resident heard the baby crying in a field behind his house
* Infant was found in chilly weather with a dog and her newborn puppies
* Doctors determined that the infant was only a few hours old
* The 14-year-old mother came to the hospital but said little about incident

(CNN) -- A dog sheltered a newborn baby abandoned by its 14-year-old mother in a field in rural Argentina until the boy was rescued, a doctor said Friday.

A resident of a rural area outside La Plata called police late Wednesday night to say that he had heard the baby crying in a field behind his house.

The man went outside and found the infant lying beside the dog and its six newborn puppies, Daniel Salcedo, chief of police of the Province of Buenos Aires, told CNN.

The temperature was a chilly 37 degrees, Salcedo said.

The dog had apparently carried the baby some 50 meters from where his mother had abandoned him to where the puppies were huddled, police said.

"She took it like a puppy and rescued it," Salcedo said. "The doctors told us if she hadn't done this, he would have died."

"The dog is a hero to us."

Dr. Egidio Melia, director of the Melchor Romero Hospital in La Plata, told CNN that police showed up at the hospital at 11:30 p.m. Wednesday with the baby who doctors say was only a few hours old.

Though the infant had superficial scratches and bruises and was bleeding from his mouth, he was in good shape, Melia said.

The next morning, the child's mother was driven by a neighbor to the hospital and told authorities the 8 pound, 13 ounce infant is hers, Melia said.

The teenager was immediately given psychological treatment and was hospitalized, he said. She has said little about the incident.

The child has been transferred to a children's hospital in La Plata, 37 miles from Buenos Aires.

*EDIT: I added the dog's photo. She looks pretty confused at the attention!

Funeral Raffle

From the Southwest Indian Foundation, a raffle to benefit the family of a young man, Riddell Namoki, who died over the holidays. His Grandfather Lawrence Namoki is a revered Hopi potter, and they are raffling this pot, called "The Blessing".

"We are raffling off this pot to help Lawrence and his family. You can see by the picture it is incredible. "The Blessing" is made of the very best and purest clay on the Hopi mountain mesas. The clay represents the earth. The hands are of the creator, holding up creation, the pot signifying the cooperating spirit of the Hopi people. The sun is above providing warm and nourishment to the earth. The images on both sides of the pot are "the Guardians", serving as protectors and providers. All the colores are natural and from the Southwest,(e.g. red from Grand Canyon, white pumas, copper and yellow ochre). This is truly a work of art, from not only a quality artist, but a quality man.

$10 dollars provides one ticket. (6 for $50) We will raffle this off on February 12th. All tickets, whether you purchase tickets online, or send thim in the mail. All tickets received by February 12th will be placed in the drawing."

NPR Story on Poultry

Protecting Backyard Chickens From Avian Flu

Well, we have this covered, I think; our chickens are in a cage off the ground, with a tin roof covering them; they have limited handling, only by Mani and I. While I can see that there would be risks with backyard chickens, I don't think we need be as fearful as they would have us believe, particularly at this stage.

Rank BS in the Confederacy of Dunces

I'm so glad that FEMA is so psychic that they can see that Katrina was a one-time event. *gag*

This is like taping a garbage bag over a broken car window in my opinion. And believe me, I've done that, and I can tell you it is a waste of time and tape.

Prosecuting Midwives

I know several of you will be interested in this article from the NY Times in regard to the perpetual struggle between mainstream medicine and midwifery, which comes down to a debate as to whether a woman, again, has rights in regard to her own health care when an infant is intrinsically involved. It also has to do with the debate about regulatory standards for professions that have generally emerged from apprenticeship rather than collegiate training and thus encounter roadblocks, some reasonable and some simply competitive, that hinder their free practice.

Like other issues of this type, I believe that even if I might not choose home birthing or natural birth or whatever for myself, I would battle for anyone else's right for freedom of access so that they can continue to have safe and comfortable birthings with the practitioner of their choice. I'm still a little leery of self delivery, unless the facilitator (usually a friend or mate) is trained in some basic first aid and resuscitation, has gone to natural birthing classes, and would be swift to obtain outside help if something goes wrong.

There are many many midwives in the world who are perfectly capable of handling births in or out of healthcare facilities, and I'd speculate in a better and more relaxing way for the mother and child. My choice would probably be a doula in a birthing center with LDRP (labor, delivery, recovery and postpartem) rooms that allow the baby to room in rather than be in a nursery. It's a good compromise betwen "hospital" and "home". But, that's just me.

Assault thrown out -- sleep sex blamed

TORONTO, Nov. 30 (UPI) -- A Toronto man has been acquitted of sexual assault charges, as medical officials said he was asleep at the time, with a disorder known as "sexsomnia."

Jan Luedecke, 33, met his victim at a party on July 6, 2003, and both had been drinking, the Toronto Sun reported.

The woman, who can't be named, fell asleep on a couch and said she awoke to find him having sex with her. She pushed him off, then called the police.

Luedecke claimed he fell asleep on the same couch and woke up when he was thrown to the floor.

Sleep expert Dr. Colin Shapiro testified Luedecke had sexsomnia, which is sexual behavior during sleep, brought on by alcohol, sleep deprivation and genetics.

The judgment outraged women's groups, the newspaper said.

"This is infuriating. It's another case of the courts not taking a woman seriously, adding yet another list to the list of excuses which men use for sexual assault," said Suzanne Jay, of the Canadian Association of Sexual Assault Centers.

I'm a sleepwalker... I've heard of sleep eating, and know people who have done weird stuff like use the closet for a bathroom... but this is the first time I've ever heard of "sexsomnia". If it's genetic, how come it's never come up before (pardon the really bad pun)?

For Muslim women, a deadly defiance

This is from The Boston Globe. There really are no words for how I feel about this subject... I have long railed against the patriarchical tendencies of many religions and cultures to suppress women, demean them, control them. In many cases, they are not just deprived of freedom and happiness, but their lives.

Lest we think this is "a Muslim thing", bear in mind that this same thing happens in Brazil, in India, and many other countries where machismo and caste and religion rule. Women deserve to be equal and free in all countries. We also deserve to maintain the freedoms we have long fought for here.

Ah, My People

From the NY Times, news from "my part" of the country, down where my Dad and stepfamily live. Franklinton is right above Bogalusa. Sun, Bush and Waldheim are between Bogalusa and Covington and Abita Springs. Oh, and Pearl River is on the other side, between Bush and Slidell. Most areas are lucky to have a post office and a gas station. Bush just got a dollar store last year, it was a big deal. They also have a laundromat and a tiny library. But it's not all in the same place, like a town, or anything.

I think I've told the story about driving into the ditch with my car one night on my way to work; I was standing on the side of the road there in Bush, disoriented, when a neighbor who was a nurse picked me up and took me home. By the time I got cleaned up and called in to work, somebody had pulled my car out of the ditch and it was sitting in my Dad's driveway.

Martial Law Declared in NOLA

From WWL: It's about time.

This whole thing makes me sad. It is reasonable to expect people to get their minimal human needs met, but this has fallen into lawlessness.

Remember what I said? It's Thunderdome in the Tropics.

I just heard a nurse call CNN on Paula Zahn that is from Charity Hospital; I was under the impression they had evacuated, but no. Not only haven't they evacuated, but they are having to start IVs on some of the nurses, who are beginning to get ill and are exhausted and poorly fed. I pray they get assistance as soon as possible to the health care workers who are straining in the shells of the hospitals and nursing homes without relief and at risk of life and limb, literally.

85 Years... Don't Forget!

On Aug. 26, 1920, the 19th Amendment to the United States Constitution, guaranteeing American women the right to vote, was declared in effect.

Just a reminder to women of all ages... we didn't always have the rights we enjoy today, so don't take them for granted, and fight to protect them. As you can see from what is going on in Iraq and other foreign countries, equality is little but a fantasy and even basic rights are hard to come by and defend for women.

You have power, particularly here; you have a voice and a vote. Use them wisely, to express yourself and to support the causes you believe in. Teach your sisters and daughters to do the same.

But I agree with a commenter I saw on another LJ... no Marilyn Manson, dude. He is lame. Johnny Cash did a much better cover of "Personal Jesus".
