Teachers
I give thanks for teachers and all the ways they have enriched my life.
We all remember those special teachers who seemed to bring something extra to our classroom experiences. These teachers had such a positive impact on us that we will remember them for the rest of our lives.
Still today God blesses us with teachers. They may be people at work and at home or even strangers who share something important we need to hear or see at a particular place and time.
So let us make today a day to bless teachers, a day for remembering the lessons we have already learned, and a day for looking forward to the lessons still ahead. It is never too late for us to learn something new. Our lessons become more meaningful and our lives more enriched by the many, varied teachers in life.
"Make me to know your ways, O Lord; teach me your paths." Psalm 25:4
~~~
In Buddhist thought, every person we meet is a teacher, every experience is a lesson. No matter how pleasant or unpalatable, whether it elicits joy or pain, there is something to learn from everyone and everything. If we maintain that spirit and approach life as an adventure, an education leading to enlightenment and wisdom, we can alter our perspective of the valleys and understand the exquisite brevity of the mountaintop experiences. (You know what they say, time flies when you're having fun, but boy is it a drag when you're not). It may seem a heavy task, but it is our job to accept that we are getting a lesson, even when we don't understand what it is; perhaps some time later our experience can help us support someone else, or serve as a reminder to avoid circular paths that lead to the same outcomes. People who consciously serve as our teachers in life, our mentors, guides and helpers, develop a way of giving us enough so that we are interested enough to continue learning on our own after our time with them is completed; as in the aphorism, they do not give us fish, they teach us to fish. How blessed a role that is to serve others by helping them to become independent thinkers, curious and inquisitive!
