Sad loss of a talented woman. She had a "minor" accident while learning to ski. Carries a warning, even a seemingly benign head injury can lead to brain trauma; never ignore it, always get checked.

She starred in one of my favorite movies (though the movie is certainly not as good as the book), "The Handmaid's Tale". I have long encouraged women who are interested in the rights of women in patriarchy to both read the book and watch the movie.

She was my age, married to Liam Neeson, and had two sons with him. She was from an esteemed acting family and has left a hefty resume of stage and screen work.

George Carlin died.

We're losing too many bright minds lately. This is depressing. Bye, George. I'll bet you'll get a pass for the dirty words.

This may be my favorite Cohen song, next to his version of "Sweet Jane" from the "Natural Born Killers" soundtrack (the movie still frightens me)*. I think this song is what healing is about to me, finding a centered place of light and happiness in spite of perpetual chaos and war. It says to me, there is no such thing as perfection. It says, we are all broken, but that is not our tragedy but our hope, perhaps our salvation as we turn away from the insane paths of our perpetrators. I'm often struck by the concept that pain lets us know we are alive, and we have choices as to how we will deal with it, whether submission, endurance or transcendence.

There is a crack in everything.
That's how the light gets in.

I'm posting this one today for the Amish girls, returned to the earth in white, lost to violence but not separated from their innocence or their people, who have a capacity for forgiveness that I am in awe of. C'est la guerre, little ones.

*EDIT: So, it must be "Waiting for a Miracle" I like of his from that album, as "Sweet Jane" is the Cowboy Junkies (thanks, [livejournal.com profile] koppermoon). I do know I like a slow version of that song with a gravelly voiced male lead, though.

Jeez. Steve Irwin. *sob* My sympathies are with his wife and family, they always looked so happy.

He always reminded me of my crazy Cajun ex. It does figure that a critter would do him in, a man like that never dies peacefully in his bed of old age.

I thought about him the other night when Jack Hanna was on Larry King with all the animals; he was so excitable, and I thought, 'I wonder what kind of animals Steve would make Larry handle?'

Crikey.

A rather interesting Halloween activity, probably. From one of my family genealogy sites, Dowsing for Graves.

Oh... I have a pair of dowsing rods I have played with and used for energy assessment (I prefer a pendulum, and would be interested in trying one for this). If you decide to try making a pair, in addition to the wire coathangers, get a couple of plastic drinking straws and put the handle part down in them to use as grips (you can cut the length to fit and if you want them to stay on, glue a bead to the handle end that is bigger than the straw). That way you won't hold them too snugly and it will allow them to move freely. It takes a little more practice with sleeves but I think they work better that way.

Four Candles for You
by Unknown

The first candle represents our grief.
The pain of losing you is intense.
It reminds us of the depth of our love for you.

This second candle represents our courage.
To confront our sorrow,
To comfort each other,
To change our lives.

This third candle we light in your memory.
For the times we laughed,
The times we cried,
The times we were angry with each other,
The silly things you did,
The caring and joy you gave us.

This fourth candle we light for our love.
We light this candle that your light will always shine.
As we enter this holiday season and share this night of remembrance
with our family and friends.

We cherish the special place in our hearts
that will always be reserved for you.
We thank you for the gift
your living brought to each of us.

We love you.
We remember you.
