Finally reached my old roommate Toni by phone; she and a girlfriend evac'd to Houston last weekend (it took them 12 hours to get there) and they are okay. Her husband, a construction supervisor, travels a lot on jobs, and was in Iowa. He is returning to pick her up later this weekend. St. Tammany Parish is supposed to be opening up (conditionally) on Tuesday, and they are going to wait until Wednesday or Thursday to go back, assess damage, and if power is out, plan what they will do until then. He has a travel trailer attached to his doolie he lives in on jobs, so they might just stay in that if need be.

My Toni. Always landing on her feet.

I need to check in with Mary again, see what her plans for the short and long term are. If Toni is right, maybe Mary's house she has been renting in Mandeville is intact and she'll be able to move into it. I don't think there's even any reason for her to go back to Bay St. Louis, and there sure isn't any reason for Arman to go to Waveland, which doesn't exist anymore.

I still haven't heard from Dad, and can't reach his cell phone yet. I hope he has his charger with him. Maybe they'll go home in the next week and the power will be back up. I read on WWL that almost a half million people have restored power. That's certainly a start.

Oops, first of the month. Our bank account and my short limit credit card are both overdrawn. Will think about that later. It's the holiday weekend, we got our check, it will just take time to get everything unsnarled. We're behind from the plane ticket last month but everything evens out in the end.

I'm planning on taking my My Points credits and sending them to the Red Cross or whatever charity things they may set up there. I have about enough for a $10 Wal Mart card and that isn't much but every little bit helps. I also plan to look into the shelters here in town within the next week and see if I can do something. I know how people are... lots of times they are all gung ho right after something but in a week or two they get burnt out or distracted and there needs to be a second wave of people to volunteer and keep things going. We don't have kids or jobs so maybe we can help as our physical capabilities allow us.

I am pleased that people I was wondering about here are slowly popping up as they get power and internet access again. Oh, and happy birthday to you folks on my FL who are celebrating the anniversaries of your birth this weekend. Take some special time for yourself to rest and renew your spirits.

"Alexithymia" combines the Greek
a-, without;
lexis, word or expression;
and thymos, mental state or mood.
It is a condition wherein a person is unable
to express a certain emotion in its true terms
but rather resorts to symptoms.

I am amazed at Japan... they have offered $200,000 to the US towards relief.

Hello?

Lance Armstrong donated more than that.

Thank heavens they've gotten the Stooperdome and Convention Center evac'd. Now get the rest of them out, and fix those danged levee breaches.

Here is an open letter from Anne Rice on NOLA. Some folks don't like Anne, but she's a NOLA native and she loves the city. Her words are wise here.
